i destroyed a dead tree in the garden of a city

he wakes on a stone in the stream searching for a pity
pleads
as the morning passing crowd flees
drop a penny on me
and they recommend
keep and eye out
for the lawless men
but they're not brave
stick to the rules they make

they're pinned to the garden gates

on the walks home i see
a black old beggar man
his cotton's torn at the seams
he's heading off to sleep
why must the people try to find him
well i recommend
don't be a fool again
use the wood i cut you wise
keep warm and out of sight
and wake head heavy
in the morning again
